What if you want to work with vector graphics and don’t have Adobe Illustrator? Simple, download Inkscape. Inkscape certainly has a very different interface, and many things will seem different if you’re an Illustrator user, but if not, this could be an excellent platform to start learning. For non-designers, there will be even more to learn first, but in general, for an Illustrator user or someone familiar with the powerful Freehand MX, it shouldn’t take more than an hour to locate and understand the logic of paths, point modification, line and fill shaping, scaling, creating groups, layers, or overlapping shapes. So far, what’s new? Compared to Illustrator, Inkscape doesn’t currently have a multi-page option. We’ll see how new versions progress, but for now, Inkscape presents itself as a great option because it’s free.
